Remember yourself

As a child, I told anyone who would listen that I was a writer, and one day, I would be published. I was quite firm about this, and I refused to acknowledge any naysayers. Well, now I write full-time. I’m the managing editor of Mobile Electronics magazine, and I’m pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. I’m extremely busy and that’s why I haven’t blogged in a while. I just wanted to check in and acknowledge some big changes. I’ve lost close friends in the last few years– including Sholom, S.R. Lavin, the author of many poems and novels. I’ve been volunteering a lot more for local history organizations, and working on a book about the history of North Palm Beach, which will be published by The History Press (Arcadia Publishing). I’ve run all over the map, from Miami to Dade City multiple times, bought a new car, pulled out the cylinder head of my truck more than once, started projects and set them aside. I’ve stood under the trees on sunny days in the woods, relishing being alive. And I can tell you this one thing: When things get busy, crazy, and you feel like you’re unwinding, remember to be present. As Gurdjieff said, try to remember to remember yourself. Remember yourself, always and everywhere. Sense your body. Be grateful that you are living inside a body that can sense itself. If you can teach yourself to be present, then hopefully you won’t forget the important things and maybe time will slow down for you, just a little bit.
